We are thrilled to announce that our "Tanabata-inspired" glowing costumes have officially been nominated for the "Audience's Favorite Costume" award on the People’s Association (PA) website.

Thoughts behind the costume

 

This costume is a custom design created exclusively for this event, inspired by the Japanese festival dance Yosakoi, known for its dynamic movements and celebratory energy.

This year's Chingay theme is “Wish”. In response, the luminous skirt represents the Milky Way, drawing inspiration from Tanabata, a traditional Japanese festival based on a legend of two star-crossed lovers who are allowed to meet only once a year across the celestial river. During Tanabata, people write their wishes on strips of paper and hang them on bamboo branches, expressing hopes for the future.

We also incorporated light sticks, used in Japan's fan culture known as Wotagei, where coordinated movements and glowing lights are used to convey enthusiasm, support, and shared emotion. Through this element, light becomes a symbol of collective positivity and encouragement.

Combining Yosakoi, Tanabata, Wotagei, and fox masks, we brought together elements of Japanese culture to express 'light' and 'wishes'.
