About JAS
About The Japanese Association, Singapore
The Japanese Association, Singapore was established more than a century ago in 1915 and reconstituted in 1957. The early objective of the Association was aimed at creating a mutual-aid group to look after one another’s welfare, set up educational facilities, maintain the Japanese cemetery and promote global exchanges.
Besides realizing its original intent, postwar Japanese Association has also been more active in promoting exchange and interactions with the Singapore community. Our new clubhouse is also designed to be culturally oriented to suit this purpose.
One of the objectives of the Japanese Association is to become an international cultural exchange ground for people to meet, chat and relax.
The new clubhouse, officially opened by Deputy Prime Minister BG (NS) Lee Hsien Loong on 23rd May 1998, is a building designed and constructed with a modern exterior while incorporating rich Japanese cultural flair in its interiors.
Complemented by its excellent location along Adam Road, the clubhouse has a built-in area of nearly 8,000 square meters (4 times bigger than the previous location). On a freehold land size of approximately 5,600 square meters, the clubhouse has also been enhanced to provide members with improved services in a cosier setting and a much more pleasant environment. It is a clubhouse that can instil a sense of belonging and pride amongst its members.
With a larger space available, we will be able to better organise our involvements with local charitable activities. More opportunities can also be created for cultural exchange and social interaction on a larger scale between our members and the different communities.
At present we have approximately 4,158 Ordinary Members (Japanese nationals with voting rights) and 532 Associate Members. Only Associate memberships are transferable. We have 649 corporate members. (1 April 2026)
We hereby cordially invite you to join us as an Associate Transferable Member!

President for Year 2026
Mr Oyama Masahiro
My name is Oyama, and I have been appointed as President for the 2026 fiscal year at the Annual General Meeting of the Japanese Association, held on Wednesday, March 18, 2026. Please allow me to say a few words upon assuming this position.
Last year, I had the privilege of serving as Vice President and participated in various events organized by the Association, including the Sports Festival and the Summer Festival. On each occasion, I had the opportunity to witness the dedicated efforts of former President Murayama, the board members, officers, members, and volunteers. Through these experiences, I truly felt the strong sense of unity and warmth within the Japanese Association community.
Regarding the Japanese Association building, which had been showing signs of aging, renovation work began in 2024, and in November of last year, we were able to hold a reopening event to celebrate its renewal. Many local Singaporeans visited the facility, and I was once again deeply impressed by how the Association has become a beloved part of the local community and serves as an important bridge to Singaporean society.
Some of you may have watched the video “The History of the Japanese Association in Singapore,” produced by the Historical Archives Committee. The video depicted how the Association has overcome various challenges since its establishment, as well as the efforts of our predecessors and the warm support we have received from the local Singaporean community. I was deeply moved with respect for our predecessors and gratitude toward all those who have supported us over the years.
Furthermore, at last week’s memorial service held at the Japanese Cemetery Park, I reflected on the history and legacy of the Japanese community in Singapore. I was also impressed by the fact that the cemetery park continues to be beautifully maintained through the cleaning efforts of many volunteers, including students, and that it remains cherished by the local community.
Following the establishment of the Japanese Cemetery in 1891 and the Japanese School in 1912, the Japanese Association in Singapore was founded in 1915 and now boasts a history of more than 110 years. This long history has been built upon the tireless efforts of our predecessors, the warm support of the Singaporean community, and the dedication of all those who continue to support the Association’s activities today. I would like to once again express my sincere gratitude to former President Murayama, as well as to all board members, officers, members, and volunteers.
This year also marks a significant milestone: SJ60, the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Singapore. I sincerely hope that this occasion will further strengthen the friendship between our two countries and expand new opportunities for exchange toward the future. The Japanese Association will also strive to celebrate this milestone together with all of you through various activities, including the main events scheduled for November 28 and 29.
To serve as President of the Japanese Association, with its long history and tradition, in such an important year is both a great honor and a responsibility that I take with utmost seriousness. While faithfully inheriting the history and spirit built by our predecessors, I will do my utmost, albeit modestly, to further strengthen the Association’s presence in Singaporean society and to deepen its roots as a trusted organization through cultural exchange and contributions to the local community.
I sincerely ask for your continued support and cooperation.
