The Japan Study Tour organized by the Associate Committee took place from 8 to 17 May. A total of 16 people went on the tour. Connecting from Haneda Airport, we first visited Sapporo, where we stayed for a night before heading for Obihiro. In Obihiro, we were shown around by Mr. Goto and Ms. Takeda. We visited many spots such as the Millennium Forest, Ryugetsu Sweetpia Garden, the former Kofuku Station, Shichiku Gardens and the Ban’ei Horse Race Track. We were blessed with good weather, with temperatures at an uncharacteristic, record-setting 28 degrees Celsius, causing many participants who had conscientiously prepared for the cold instead be disappointed by the heat. The food in Obihiro was delectable, and the robatayaki at “Akachochin”as well as our dinner at Tokachigawa Onsen Daiichi Hotel were particularly mouthwatering. We stayed in Obihiro for two nights. On the 12th, we dropped by Shinmura Farm en route to Sounkyo. Looking at cows roaming and grazing on the wide, expansive green pastures, it really did feel like we were in Hokkaido. At Sounkyo, we took the Kurodake Ropeway and ascended into the middle of a world of silver, with chains of tall, snowcapped mountains continuing into the distance. We admired the view for quite a long time despite the cold. On the 13th, we proceeded to Asahikawa where we visited the Otokoyama Sake Brewery and the Asahiyama Zoo. We popped by the Ramen Village for lunch, and then visited the Snow Crystal Museum after that. We then had a hearty dinner at “Hanamarutei”, an elegant restaurant serving Hokkaido specialties that was made famous by the manga Sota no Hocho. We were awed by the beauty of Furano, which we visited on the 14th. The flower fields of Biei, Shikisai Valley and Tomita Farm were a sight to behold, and the participants enjoyed shopping for local produce. We spent one last day in Sapporo on the 15th before heading back to Tokyo for a free and easy 2 days’ stay. Besides exploring the Odaiba area where our hotel was located, participants also ventured to districts such as Tsukiji and Odaiba on their own plans. We came back to Singapore on the 17th with sweet memories of our time in Hokkaido and Tokyo.
