新年のご挨拶
Greetings for New Year

　会員の皆様、謹んで新年のお慶びを申し上げます。
　新年にあたり、新しい年に思いを馳せる前に、昨年を振り返ってみたいと思います。2011年は、私たちシンガポール在住の日本人にとって、例年以上に祖国への思いを強く持ち、また、当地社会との絆についても考え直す年となりました。
　3月11日に東日本一帯を襲った大地震と津波、それらにより引き起こされた原発事故は、多くの尊い命を奪い、祖国の美しい町並みを破壊し、各種産業にも多大な損失を与えました。戦後最大の国難と言ってよいと思います。こうした中にあっても、私ども日本人は、秩序をもって復興に向かって立ち上がりました。そして忘れてならないのは、シンガポールを含む海外からの暖かい援助の手でした。
　私は震災直後の3月24日に日本人会会長に就任し、柴田前会長の後を受けて、理事や会員の皆様とともに義捐金の呼びかけや各種支援イベントの展開に力を尽くして参りました。その過程で多数のシンガポールの皆様から多額の義捐金、多くの援助物資、暖かい励ましのお言葉を頂戴しました。シンガポールの皆様はまた、率先して募金や支援イベントにも取組んで下さいました。私たちシンガポール在住日本人にとって、このような暖かい社会で生活や仕事ができることの有り難さ、シンガポール社会との絆の強さを改めて痛感した忘れられない一年となりました。
　こうした中、日本人会としては、運動会、夏祭り、日本語スピーチコンテスト等、多くの恒例行事を執り行って参りましたが、いずれも例年以上に日本人同士、あるいはシンガポール社会との「絆」を意識した心に残るイベントの数々だったと思います。ここに改めて、会員・会友の皆様、シンガポール社会の皆様のご協力・ご支援に厚く御礼申し上げます。
　さて、そして新年がやって来ました。今年は辰年。風水ではシンガポールには「龍脈」が流れていて、それがシンガポールの発展に結びついていると言われているそうです。リー・シェンロン首相は、今年還暦をお迎えになる年男で、漢字のお名前は李顕龍です。本号の表紙にも味わい深い「龍」の字が躍っております。私たちシンガポールの日本人も、昨年築き上げた「絆」を糧にして、力強く発展を続けるシンガポール社会とともに龍の様に力強く飛躍致しましょう。
　本年も引き続き会員・会友の皆様のご協力・ご支援をお願い申し上げますとともに、皆様の新年の御多幸をお祈りし、新年のご挨拶と致します。

A very happy new year to everyone!
Year 2011 had been an eventful and memorable year. Especially for us, Japanese, it was a year that we felt even harder for our country; it was also a year for us to reconsider our ties with Singapore society.
On March 11 2011, the Tohoku Region in northeastern Japan was hit by a large scale earthquake and tsunami, which swept away towns, industries and many of our loved ones. It was the largest disaster after world war II, which also led to a series of accidents at the nuclear power plants. Amid such devastation, our people from all over Japan are united to rebuild the disaster stricken region for recovery. We have also received much assistance from our friends overseas, including Singapore.
I have assumed the position as the Chairman of JAS on March 24, not long after the earthquake. Succeeding Mr. Shibata, together with the board members and members of JAS, we were involved heavily in events to call for donations and assistance for Japan’s recovery. I am most grateful for the assistance, many words of encouragement and concerns, as well as donations from our friends in Singapore. Being able to establish a strong bond with the Singaporean society and to live in such a warm and friendly environment has made the past year a truly meaningful one.
In 2011, JAS has organized many exciting events, such as Sports Festival, Summer Festival and Japanese Speech Contest etc, involving our members, family and friends from Singapore. I believe these events have contributed to an even stronger bond and friendship among the Japanese community, as well as with Singapore. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved, who has made these events a success.
The year 2012 is the year of the Dragon, and according to the “Feng Shui” saying, the energy of the Dragon would guide Singapore’s prosperity. Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, who would be turning 60 this year, also has a “Dragon” in his Chinese character name, and even the cover page of this issue has calligraphy of the word “Dragon”. I hope we, the Japanese living in Singapore, would continue to cherish the bonds we have established in the yesteryear and bring it to the next, with more energy and goodness.
Finally, I wish everyone a continuing good health and a prosperous year of the Dragon!
