3月11日（金）東北・関東にマグニチュード9.0という未曾有の大地震、大津波が襲いました。地震発生直後からシンガポール日本人会には、被災者に義援金を寄付したいという申し出が次々と寄せられました。日本大使館、シンガポール日本人会、シンガポール日本商工会議所は共同してシンガポール赤十字を通じ、募金活動を行うことに決定し、3月14日（月）から4月30 日（土）まで義援金の受付を行いました。この間、日本人社会だけではなく、シンガポール社会全体から、お見舞いや暖かい励ましの言葉とともに、多くの義援金が寄せられました。連日、多くの日本人会会員とともに、地元のシンガポールの方々が直接日本人会に足を運んで、義援金を届けてくださいました。地元の資産家Miss Elaine Lowからは100万ドルの寄付が寄せられました。シンガポール国立大学日本研究科の学生は大学のキャンパスで募金活動を展開し、週末の2 日間だけで約6万ドルを集めてくださいました。企業からは、ローカル社員も含めて社員一人一人からの義援金をまとめて寄付いただきました。ホテルやレストラン、スーパーマーケットなどに義援金缶を設置し、売り上げの一部を義援金として寄付いただきました。また、インターナショナルスクール、ローカルスクール、モスクでも生徒や地元の人たち中心に義援金活動が行われ、折りヅルや励ましのメッセージを書いた垂れ幕をいただきました。乗客の会員に10ドルの義援金を渡してくれたタクシー運転手。少しずつ貯めたお小遣いを義援金として持ち込んでくれた小学生たち。個人やグループでチャリティーイベントやチャリティーバザーを企画、実施された方々。日本人会講座や同好会関係者も、自発的にチャリティーイベントを企画、実施し、数多くの会員に呼びかけ、義援金活動を行いました。資産家から一般市民に至るまで、官民、老若男女、国籍を問わず広がった支援の輪。特にシンガポール社会全体から心のこもったお見舞い、励ましの言葉を数多く頂き、改めて私たち日本人会が地域に根差したクラブであることを実感すると同時に、シンガポール社会の日本に対する思いの暖かさを実感いたしました。未曾有の災害において、国境を越えて支援が行われたことに対して、深く感謝いたしますと同時に、被災地の一日も早い復興を心より祈念いたします。

Unprecedented enormous earthquake of M9.0 and tsunami have struck Tohoku-Kanto area on 11th March 2011. Immediately after the earthquake, many relief funds and donations were offered to Japan Association, Singapore (JAS). The Japanese Embassy, JAS & JCCI decided to jointly carry out relief funds activity from 14th March to 30th April in collaboration with the Singapore Red Cross. During this period, we received many relief funds & also messages of encouragement, not only from the Japanese society here but also from overall communities in Singapore. Many JAS members and Singapore citizens and residents visited JAS office everyday to bring the relief funds. A wealthy family Ms Elaine Low donated one million Singapore dollars. Students from the Department of Japanese Studies of the National University of Singapore carried out relief fund collection activity and received S$60K only in 2 days during a weekend. Various companies brought relief funds collected from their employees. Many hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and etc offered cans of relief funds and donated a part of their sales. Moreover, many students and communities from international schools, local schools, mosques and etc also offered relief funds collection activity, messages and folded paper cranes of encouragement. A taxi driver offered S$10 of donation to a JAS member passenger. Pupils from elementary schools brought their own saving of pocket monies. Many individuals and communities, including people related to various courses and other activities at JAS, voluntarily initiated to collect relief funds through charity events, bazaars and etc. We received tremendous chain of supports from wealthy to ordinary people, regardless of genders, ages and nationalities. We also received very heartful and encouragement messages from the Singapore citizens and residents. As JAS, we really felt the warmness of the Singapore citizens and residents, while realizing also how deep JAS has taken root in the Singapore society. We would like to express our most sincere appreciation for the condolences and assistances and we also would like to pray for the victims and affected areas to recover from these challenging circumstances soon.
