Otonowakai Profile Introduction of Otonowakai In 1996, we established one musical performance group, “Otonowakai” of Kyoto, where Gagaku has been preserved for over a thousand years. Since then, under the direction of the members from Music Department of the Imperial Household Agency, we have demonstra ted our achievements through our yearly concerts and overseas performances in Monaco, Prague, Évian-les-Bains, Sydney, and other locations. For our additional important intention, we also introduce this traditional culture of Gagaku to the next generations by workshops at local schools. What is Gagaku? The word, “Gagaku,”originally means, music made for the common people of the world, but is also designated the word for traditional music in the literal sense. The Gagaku that exists in China and Korea has a different meaning then the Gagaku of Japan. Gagaku is based on the ancient songs and dances of Japan. Also musical instruments, songs, and dances from old China and Korea influenced it. The foundation of Gagaku was formed in the tenth century. It became Japan’s oldest classical music and dance. |
